Performance History


Tony Hughes began playing publicly in 1974 in early jazz fusion and R&B groups. His career has included working with Big Bands and society bands.  After 1980 he became a regular on the Philadelphia area jazz scene jamming with many of the city's top organ players.

Among them Don Patterson, Richard Groove Holmes and Trudy Pitts. Over the next ten years he would jam, gig continuously! He had opportunities to play with many notable players. Some of who were Cecil Payne Junior Cook and Eddie Mcfadden, Jaco Pastorius and countless others playing straight ahead and avant-garde jazz.

During this same period he was freelancing with jazz groups in the Philly area. Notably, The H factor jazz unit with drummer Robert Henderson, The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. The Akneaten Band, and Sphinx a band which featured avant-garde saxophonist Bobby Zankel.   In !988 Mr Hughes led the Anthony Hughes Modern Music ensemble a quintet with piano vibes bass and drums. In October 1988 a concert was produced featuring six compositions. A recording session followed producing a master. CD's are available!

Since the 90's he has mainly worked in small groups solo's duos and trios.
Since 2003 he has also performed the music of Django Reinhardt. Mr. Hughes is a former member of the Hot club of Philadelphia.
